Getsu Fūma Den (月風魔伝? lit. "Legend of Fūma Getsu") is a 1987 Famicom game by Konami starring Getsu Fūma. It was released on July 7, 1987 in Japan only.

While this game had no sequel for a long time, several Getsu Fūma Den-based stages appeared in other Konami games. These stages are set in Hell and appear in Konami Wai Wai World, Wai Wai World 2: SOS!! Parsley Castle and Castlevania: Harmony of Despair.

A sequel to this game was finally announced in 2021, 34 years after the original game, called Getsu Fūma Den: Undying Moon[1] for PC (Steam) and Nintendo Switch. The original Getsu Fūma Den game (along with other perks) will be included to users who buy the Early Access version.

Plot[]

In the first year of the Demon Age (魔暦元年 Mareki Gan-nen), the demon lord Ryūkotsuki (龍骨鬼) escaped from Hell and plotted to conquer the surface world ruled by the three Getsu brothers (月氏三兄弟 Getsu-shi San Kyōdai). They fought against Ryūkotsuki, each wielding one of the three spiritual Pulse Blades (波動剣 Hadōken) that have been passed within the clan for generations. However, the brothers were ultimately defeated by the demon and only Fūma, the youngest of the three, survived.

Vowing to avenge his slain brothers, he ventures into Kyōki-tō (狂鬼島 Mad Demon Island) to recover the three stolen Pulse Blades and summon the spirits of his brothers to defeat Ryūkotsuki.

Relation with the Castlevania series[]

Characters and stages from this game appeared on downloadable content for Castlevania: Harmony of Despair. The final boss is Ryukotsuki, who is also the boss in the Harmony of Despair downloadable Chapter 11, The Legend of Fuma.

The game generally follows Japanese mythology, but several enemies are either similar or the same as those which appear in Castlevania. Some of them were later reused in the Castlevania series, such as Shimon, known as "Hellmont" in Harmony of Despair, a parody of Simon Belmont and a Skeleton.
