- "Don't reject me!"
- —Zacchino to Charlotte when she walks away.
Zacchino is an enemy in Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin. He is described as "a stylish and sociable demon who is quite attentive to the ladies", and is notable for attacking male characters by brandishing a cutlass, while presenting female characters with roses.
Zacchino's design appears to have been inspired after King Henry VIII of England (1491-1547), who is most remembered for his role in the separation of the Church of England from the Roman Catholic Church and for his six marriages.
His contemporaries considered Henry in his prime to be an attractive, educated and accomplished king, and he has been described as "one of the most charismatic rulers to sit on the English throne". Besides ruling with considerable power, he was also an author and composer.
A peculiar and popular rhyme was written to remember the fates of his six consorts:
Zacchino, like all the other enemies, has been ordered to kill all intruders on sight, but he isn't especially good at his job. While he will happily attempt to stab Jonathan if he comes near, yelling out: "Die!", if the player is controlling Charlotte, he will be immediately smitten by her and instead harmlessly present her with flowers, saying: "I love you!". If she walks away, the rose wilts and Zacchino shouts: "Don't reject me!".
Zacchino acts similarly toward those characters playable in alternate modes, trying to kill Richter and offering flowers to Maria, Loretta and Stella, as well as, for some reason, the playable Old Axe Armor. Concept art exists on Konami's website depicting a woman wearing the Old Axe Armor suit, although the voice used for the character is clearly male.
