Tyrfing is a one-handed Dark-elemental sword found in Castlevania: Symphony of the Night.

Tyrfing in Castlevania

The Tyrfing only makes one appearance in Castlevania. It is found in Symphony of the Night.

Appearance in Symphony of the Night

The Tyrfing is the first Dark elemental sword encountered. However, it is utterly useless as it actually subtracts 30 from Alucard's attack strength. If the final attack value is negative, no damage will be done from the attack and the sword will pass right through the enemy. The sword makes for an excellent handicap though (and doesn't fail on every now and then like the Red Rust does), provided Alucard's strength is high enough to at least cause some damage to enemies.

It has a single unique ability, however; the Tyrfing deals Dark and Cut damage. Normally each would be assigned damage and an enemy immune to one would take only the damage of the other, but in Tyrfing's case an enemy must be immune to both damage types to resist taking full damage. The only enemies in the game which have this particular combination of immunities are the Specters in the Saturn version.

This sword can be found during the first trip to the Castle Keep. It is located in the room above and to the right of the lion-head elevator room. A more useful Dark sword, Mormegil, is found in the Catacombs after Granfaloon is defeated.

Trivia

Tyrfing or Tirfing is a cursed magical sword from Norse mythology, said to cut through any material as easily as cloth and to be incapable of missing a swing. King Svafrlami forced dwarf smiths to create the weapon, but in revenge they cursed it to kill a man each time it was drawn and to be the cause of three great evils, and to have the power to slay Svafrlami himself.
