NP C3 Spike

Besides enemies and bosses, the Castlevania series is well known for putting the player against a variety of traps and other environmental hazards in an attempt to hinder their progress and/or test their skills. Depending on their form and nature, these may or may not really count as enemies. These obstacles usually deal a great amount of damage and some may outright instantly kill the player if fallen unto. The player is then expected to devise strategies to traverse areas where these obstacles appear.

These hindrances vary from pits and other surfaces covered with deadly spikes, "bottomless" pits, bodies of deep water, swamps (some of which may be poisonous), mechanisms that trigger nearby traps, and many others.

In rare instances, these obstacles may also inflict a certain type of elemental damage, such as fire, ice, lightning, etc. They may also damage other enemies as well.

Overview[]

The most simple and recurrent of these hindrances –although not for that it means they are any less effective– are without a doubt the series' infamous spikes and "bottomless" pits, which are frequently found in areas where difficult enemies to avoid abound, such as Bats, Ghosts or Medusa Heads.

Traps usually feature spikes, although some may involve objects falling onto the player (such as platforms covered with spikes, debris or decorative furniture), crumbling or living statues, flamethrowers of several kinds, fire-covered surfaces, pools or falling molten lava, contraptions or pressure plates that activate a nearby trap when interacted or stepped upon, such as arrows/bolts fired at the player from a wall, walls with spikes that abruptly rise from the floor, powerful or numerous enemies released from a cage, etc.
