The Count is a recurring antagonist in Captain N: The Game Master, appearing in several episodes. He is a rather loose adaptation of Count Dracula, the main antagonist from the Castlevania franchise, although he is never referred to by this name.

He was voiced by Garry Chalk.

History[]

Despite being based on the main antagonist of the Castlevania franchise, the Count from Captain N very rarely played a major role in the show and was often in a more subservient position.

He was the officiant at the wedding of Simon Belmont and Mother Brain in the episode "Mr. and Mrs. Mother Brain".

His last appearance in the show, although one of his most prominent ones, was in the Season 3 episode "Return to Castlevania", where he devises an intricate plan to discredit the Belmont Family's reputation as heroes. For this end, his son, Alucard, tricks the N Team into thinking he is on his way to stop his evil father, only to at one point reveal both were in cahoots to set them a trap.

Appearance and personality[]

In his original design, which ran from Season 1 and 2 of the Captain N cartoon, the Count was seen wearing a flamboyant yellow Victorian suit bearing an extravagantly large collar and wearing a pitch black cape with red insides over it. On the other hand, his shirt and tie had a contrasting purple color, and both the sleeves as well as the tie were adorned in a ruffled style. He had a square shaped hairstyle fashioned in a mullet and ending with a bit of long hair underneath. His skin tone was blue with a slight tint of green. He had thick and red lips and was normally seen with an unamused expression, probably as a result of his sense of superiority; that is, until he entered into action, at which point his visage turned both expressionless and terrifying at the same time.

However, starting from Season 3, and like many other characters from the show, the Count went through a heavy redesign (probably due to being drawn by a different animation studio). His facial features became heavily simplified, his skin tone became uniformly blue, his lips were thinner and no longer red colored, and while his hair remained in a square style, it was no longer a mullet and the long hair was removed. The design of his suit became more formal and blue colored, same as his cape, although in a darker tone and wearing a red bow tie.

His overall demeanor also suffered a change during this latter era, and instead of being quiet and calculative as in the first two seasons, he became more impatient and frequently annoyed, often speaking his mind out loud.

Powers and abilities[]

  • Bat Form: The Count can transform into a bat at will. It's worth noting that the bat forms he takes greatly vary from episode to episode.
  • Immortality: Being a vampire, the Count is presumably immortal. He is known to have fought against Trevor Belmont several years ago (probably centuries), way before Simon's era.
  • Necromancy: The Count has the power to reanimate and control undead creatures.
  • Spellcasting: The Count is knowledgeable in the arts of magic and is skilled in diverse forms of spellcasting.

Being a vampire, the Count physically cannot withstand sunlight, so he's always seen either indoors or during nighttime.

Trivia[]

  • Apparently, the name "Dracula" couldn't be used in the series due to legal reasons, so he had to be referred to simply as "The Count".[citation needed]
  • Unlike in the games, where Dracula speaks with perfect English, the Captain N Count speaks with a Slavic accent, similar to Bela Lugosi's take on the novel character.
