"Once more, our family shares the fate of the Morris family. We are Lecardes, after all."
— Stella to Jonathan and Charlotte in Portrait of Ruin

Stella Lecarde (ステラ・リカード Sutera Rikādo?, lit. "Stella Ricardo") is a character and major antagonist in Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin. She is Loretta's twin sister and daughter of Eric Lecarde, one of the protagonists from Castlevania: Bloodlines. Both young women were captured by an old vampire named Brauner, who infected them with vampirism, and who since then took them in as their adoptive father.

Stella is fought twice as a boss over the course of the game, first by herself and the second alongside her sister in a battle that determines how the rest of the game would play out.

In one of the alternate modes of the game, both she and Loretta become playable characters and the story of how they came to fall into Brauner's clutches is further elaborated.

History[]

Stella was one of Eric Lecarde's twin daughters alongside Loretta Lecarde, with Stella being the sibling who inherited her father's physical prowess.

One day, when Eric investigated the newly awakened Dracula's Castle, he was left missing, prompting Stella to search for him alongside Loretta. They eventually found him lying on the ground inside Brauner's room before the vampire appeared behind the sisters and vampirized them in front of a hapless Eric. He then cast a spell on them to make them believe that he was their father.

In the main game, Stella first meets Jonathan and Charlotte inside the Sandy Grave, alongside Brauner and Loretta (although Loretta made her appearance earlier on). In the conversation, she largely relegates to antagonizing the duo over disrespect against Brauner.

The next time the duo meet Stella, she threatens to kill the young hunters alone and fights them, only to be overpowered and briefly regaining her humanity. Jonathan tries to kill her, only for Loretta to arrive in time and take her away. However, Stella dropped a locket containing a picture of her alongside "Wind" and Loretta. Jonathan and Charlotte pick it up and rush to the Entrance to ask Wind about it. Wind discloses his true identity as Eric and that Loretta and Stella were his daughters and not Brauner's, opening the window to use a purification spell on them.

Loretta and Stella act as the bosses of the Master's Keep, within its dining room. If Jonathan and Charlotte simply defeat them in this encounter without casting the Sanctuary spell, Brauner will spirit them away as the castle crumbles. With all three vampires fled and the castle crumbling, Eric expresses regret over the situation and vanishes to the afterlife. This is followed by the game over screen.

If the sisters were cured from their vampirism by using the Sanctuary spell, they return to their human form and regain their senses. They show their gratitude by offering to perform a ritual that allows Jonathan to utilize the Vampire Killer's full power. If Jonathan accepts the ritual, he has to defeat the Whip's Memory alone. Defeating the Whip's Memory will cause the Vampire Killer to unlock, turning it into a much stronger weapon.

After Dracula's defeat, they finally meet up with their father's ghost, and Stella is especially distraught when he finally passes, falling to her knees and sobbing. She also admits that, considering herself the older of the two, she takes a greater share of the responsibility than the "younger" Loretta.

In Sisters Mode, Stella is able to damage enemies and objects that the player rubs the stylus over.

Appearance and personality[]

Stella possesses heterochromia, with her right eye turning red. As a human before her turning and after she was cursed, both of her eyes are green. A similar effect was observed with her younger sister Loretta.

Stella is the older twin and the more emotional of the two. She typically specializes in physical attacks, primarily those that involve sword strikes and energy waves. As a vampiress, she looks down upon humans as inferior to her. She's also a lot more aggressive as shown in her active bickering against Jonathan in the Sandy Grave, and when she attacks Jonathan and Charlotte when she is alone without Brauner's supervision, despite his orders not to.

Attacks/Abilities:

"The fire of hatred burns in her cold eyes.

Stella, the daughter of Brauner, defied her father's orders and set out on her own to defeat Jonathan and his men. Stella is skilled with a sword and attacks with a variety of sword techniques. She also floats in the air, making it very difficult to hit her with some weapons. Choose a weapon that can be used up the air, so that you can attack wherever Stella is. Use recovery items sparingly."

Por Stella attack Cleaving Wave(裂波)[1]
Stella lands on the ground and swings her sword to create a shockwave in front of her.
Por Stella attack (2) Whirlwind(疾風)[1]
Stella swings her sword and sends out sword energy in front of her depending on the player's position.
Por Stella attack (4) Crescent Moon(弧月)[1]
Stella sets up a few random crescent-shaped wind projectiles in the air. After setting them up, the wind projectiles start firing.
Sword attack
Stella attacks with her sword. There are usually two types of attacks:
  • Stella does a circular moon image slash.
  • Stella swings her sword forward.
Por Stella Teleport Teleport
Stella will also sometimes teleport to avoid the player's attacks.

The Stella boss battle is challenging, but she can be easily defeated with skill. For equipment, it is recommended to equip Charlotte with Don Quixote, which can be used to inflict damage on Stella by using Fire attacks (in addition, the player can increase their attack power by casting STR Boost).

After exhausting a certain amount of Stella's HP, she will add a new move to her repertoire, laying out random moon-shaped wind projectile in the air at the player. While Stella is on her way, Charlotte can take this opportunity to unleash Gale Force to deal damage to her.

There is a glitch in this boss battle that allows the player to quickly finish the fight. As shown in the picture, first have Stella attack with a circular moon image slash from where she is, then the player quickly jumps behind her, after which Stella will switch directions to face the player, after which the player quickly jumps behind Stella again. Enter the cycle. During the cycle, Jonathan can be summoned and immobilized to assist in the battle, and is recommended to be equipped with either Nebula or the Holy Claymore for weaponry. In addition, Jonathan can activate the Offensive Form skill to further increase the player's STR(Jonathan won't have an impact on Stella's AI).[2]
