Somersault, sometimes also known as Backflip, is an umbrella term used to refer to diverse types of flipping jumps that can be used either offensively or defensively.

Richter Belmont[]
The Backflip is one of Richter Belmont's signature abilities since his introduction in Castlevania: Rondo of Blood. He starts by performing a regular jump and then jumps again in midair, performing a backward somersault away from an enemy. In some games, he can cancel his somersault by attacking with his whip. In early games, this was performed by pressing the Jump button twice rapidly. In Castlevania: Harmony of Despair, it can be performed by performing a Back Dash while jumping.
Besides being used as an evasive maneuver, it also allows him to reach high platforms not possible with a normal jump, originally working as an alternative to Maria's double jump, although in later games he's been given this ability as well, along with a new jump to make exploration easier.
Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance[]
Maxim Kischine in Harmony of Dissonance is able to use a Somersault to keep himself airborne after he has performed a jump. It can be used continuously, although each use consumes 5 MP. While in use, Maxim is immune to damage and enemies he touches are damaged.
Castlevania Judgment[]
Several characters incorporate somersaults in their attacks in Castlevania Judgment. Trevor Belmont's Rolling Thunder is a a forward whip somersault attack from the air. Grant Danasty finishes his Moving Finisher Combo with a back flip that slices with his multi-bladed Ring.
Lords of Shadow[]
Somersaults in Lords of Shadow games are used to get behind an enemy, which may leave them vulnerable to a Somersault Strike.
In Lords of Shadow 2, it is a skill that is required before obtaining follow up attacks that can be performed by the Shadow Whip, Void Sword or Chaos Claws.
