Scarecrow

Abilities
Hops around to deal physical damage
Type

The Scarecrow is an impaled man looking for a brain. He attacks by hopping around with the large stake pierced through his body. His first appearance was in the Wizard of Oz-themed Forbidden Library in Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. Other enemies that appear in that area are the Tin Man and the Lion, also references to L. Frank Baum's story. His connection to the Wizard of Oz is emphasized on and off in later games.

He is also likely a reference to Vlad Ţepeş Dracula, also known as Vlad "The Impaler", who was known for impaling his enemies on large stakes and leaving them out in the open to frighten people.

OriginsEdit

Scarecrow - 01

Illustration by W. W. Denslow from The Wonderful Wizard of Oz

The living Scarecrow encountered Dorothy Gale in a field in the Munchkin Country while she was on her way to Emerald City. He told her about how he at first scared the crows away before an older one realized he was a straw man, causing the other crows to start eating the corn. The old crow then told him of the importance of having brains. The "mindless" Scarecrow joined Dorothy in the hope that The Wizard would give him a brain.

AppearancesEdit

Castlevania: Symphony of the NightEdit

There are two Scarecrow sprites in Symphony of the Night, one impaled through the stomach and the other from groin to mouth; both are more or less identical in terms of behavior. A Scarecrow will bounce toward Alucard; even though initially this may seem like an attack, the stake itself is completely harmless, even if it touches Alucard directly. Only the body deals damage and only the body can be damaged. Scarecrows are both, large and relatively fast, and since the player almost always fights them at the same time as fast-moving Schmoos, it is not uncommon to take damage from a Scarecrow suddenly coming on-screen while Alucard is jumping.

Castlevania: Order of EcclesiaEdit

Attacks by hopping around. The player only gets hurt when touching the corpse. There is one in Tymeo Mountains that is a young boy impaled through the face and feet.

TriviaEdit

  • The descriptions for this enemy state that the Scarecrow is "looking for brains", which is yet another reference to the Oz character, who joined Dorothy wishing that The Wizard would grant him a brain.
  • There exists yet a third sprite of the Scarecrow in Symphony of the Night, an impaled blonde girl. Some people in the gaming community believe that this girl is, in fact, the body of Dorothy.
