The Positron Rifle is a futuristic weapon that appears in Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow.

Given that Aria of Sorrow takes place in the year 2035, it's a little odd that this is the only piece of futuristic weaponry. While it looks cumbersome, it's actually fairly quick and very powerful, can make a short work even on many bosses. You can only get it in the Boss Rush Mode by finishing it between 4 and 5 minutes (or twice under 4). It shoots out a particle beam that penetrates multiple targets in a line, causing damage 2 or 3 times with each blast. While possessing the longest range in the game, it does not deal damage at close range.

Trivia

  • A positron is the antimatter equivalent to the electron, having the same weight and spin, but an opposite electrical charge. As it stands, antimatter is difficult and expensive to produce, often requiring massive particle accelerators, or ultra-intense irradiating lasers. As such, there has not been any attempts at weaponization of antimatter, but suffice to say: as the particle/anti-particle annihilation would result in energy releases by the rules of mass-energy equivalence, a beam of any intensity would cause intense bursts of gamma radiation, not just to a target, but also the interaction with the molecules of the air itself. One might need supernatural regenerative abilities to be able to use such a weapon without being affected by the lethal levels of radiation.
