Owls first appeared in Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse. They would first appear as eyes in the forest, then come out slowly and make a swooping path slightly downward, pause, and make another swoop coming from the other direction. They were later more commonly seen as companions to the Owl Knight, as depicted in Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, and would occasionally swoop and hover in place. If one of the two died, the other would mourn its death briefly before continuing its attack. Stand-alone owls also appeared in Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance.
Owls can also be used by the playable characters. As Maria Renard got older, she started to use owls as her main bird instead of her doves. She seems to also name it "Osca". Pellet spitting owls could serve as a familiar to Nathan Graves. Charlotte Aulin could turn herself into an owl much the same way as Alucard could turn himself into a bat.
In Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia, owls return as enemies in Tristis Pass. They drop 4 Star ranked glyphs to summon them, called Fidelis Noctua. In fact, acquiring one of these glyphs is required to complete one of Serge's quests: "Show me the Owl!".
Owl Knights return with the mourning of the other's death. When his owl is defeated, the knight shouts "No!", runs to his dead pet and crouches, becoming invincible for a brief period of time. If the knight is defeated first, the owl will come to his side and hover over him for a moment before resuming its attacks.
