Malachi (known simply as Evil in Japanese versions) appears to be based on Cthulhu of Lovecraftian literature. It should not be confused with the enemy called Ctulhu in Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, which was the English localized name given to the Devil enemy in that game.
Malachi is based on the Lovecraftian entity Cthulhu, a towering, dragon like creature with a tentacled visage, known to cause madness at a glance and capable of acts of massive destruction. Cthulhu is a member of 'the Great Old Ones', a race of mighty cosmic entities trapped for unknown reasons.
In the Castlevania series Malachi draws from its origin quite extensively, with an appearance similar to its literary counterpart; being more anthropomorphic but with a characteristic tentacled head, complete with a squid-like beak. Its distinguishing attack, 'Nightmare' also seems to be adapted from the source material.
The Malachi seems to be wearing a belt buckle, albeit without pants or a belt. It can be seen when they lean back to perform a slash attack. A Malachi also makes an appearance in Dawn of Sorrow's opening cinematic. His attacks include slashing and creating a skull seal in-front of him which appears to shoot a slowly rolling ball of fungus and mold (called Nightmare in some games). In Dawn of Sorrow, Dmitrii lets himself get attacked by one, but copies its attack and destroys it.
Encountered in the Inverted Castle, the Malachi can attempt to call forth a rolling orb of darkness to engulf its foe, or swinging its claw at them. In Alucard's case, the latter will inflict poison if he is not equipped with Topaz Circlet. As the Malachi is slow, however, multiple attacks may be possible against it while avoiding the dangers poised by both attacks.
The Malachi's attacks include slashing and creating a skull seal in-front of him which generates a nightmare that slowly rolls forward.
