"Hear me, both of you. If you continue to oppose Father, we will show you no mercy. Oppose us, and we will kill you!"
— Loretta to Jonathan and Charlotte in Portrait of Ruin

Loretta Lecarde (ロレッタ・リカード Roretta Rikādo?, lit. "Loretta Ricardo") is a character and major antagonist in Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin. She is the twin sister of Stella and daughter of Eric Lecarde, one of the protagonists from Castlevania: Bloodlines. Both young women were captured by an old vampire named Brauner, who turned them into vampires as well, and who since then has acted as their adoptive father.

Loretta is fought as a boss at one point during the course of the game alongside her sister.

In one of the alternate modes of the game, both she and Stella become playable characters and the story of how they came to fall into Brauner's clutches is further elaborated.

History[]

Loretta and Stella were Eric Lecarde's twin daughters, and Loretta was the one who inherited his magic mastery. When their father investigated Dracula's Castle, he went missing, prompting Loretta and Stella to look for him. They enter the castle against their father's wishes, believing that he is inside. Upon reaching Brauner's portrait, they found their father badly wounded, and Brauner then ambushed and turned them into vampires, setting up the events of the main game.

In the game, Loretta was first met in the City of Haze after defeating the Dullahan, interrupting a discussion about the castle between Jonathan Morris and Charlotte Aulin. She looks down on them and informs the duo that the City of Haze was only one of the many paintings from her "father" that empowers the castle. However, she also calls Charlotte a "child", annoying her before Jonathan attempts to strike her with the Vampire Killer. However, the whip puts him on hold and refuses to strike her. She tells him that she had orders from "her father" not to fight the intruders before leaving.

Loretta was met a second time inside the Sandy Grave alongside Brauner and Stella, when Brauner explains his plans to the young hunters. She and Stella got into a tense confrontation with Jonathan for disrespecting their "father", but Brauner calms them down before he sends the twins leaving.

After defeating Stella in the Tower of Death, Loretta arrives and saves her from Jonathan, leaving a final warning against the duo before making her leave alongside Stella. At this moment, Stella leaves a trinket containing a picture of "Wind", Loretta and Stella, prompting Jonathan and Charlotte ask to Wind about it. The ghost reveals that he is actually Eric Lecarde, and those were his daughters, who were captured and vampirized by Brauner, and that they can only be purified via the Sanctuary spell.

Loretta and Stella act as the boss encounter of the Master's Keep, awaiting Johathan and Charlotte in the castle's dining room. If Jonathan and Charlotte simply defeat the sisters in this encounter, Brauner spirits them away before the castle collapses. Once outside, Eric's ghost expresses regret about his daughters and vanishes before the game over screen appears.

If Charlotte uses Sanctuary to defeat them instead, they transform back into humans. After regaining her senses, Loretta is in no small amount of distress over losing her father, although she is not as bereaved as her sister Stella. Believing that Stella has worried too much on her behalf, she agrees to take a greater role in helping her. To thank the heroes for returning their humanity to them, Loretta and Stella offer to perform a ritual that would allow Jonathan to unlock the true power of the Vampire Killer, although its power may cost him his life. If he decides to take the ritual, he will have to fight the Whip's Memory alone, and the Vampire Killer will upgrade into a much stronger weapon after it is defeated.

In Sisters Mode, where the Lecarde twins are playable, Loretta is able to fire magic missiles extremely rapidly toward where the player is touching the touchscreen.

Appearance and personality[]

Loretta is a young woman wearing a green Gothic outfit. In her vampiress form, she possesses heterochromia, with her left eye turning red. In her human form, both of her eyes are green. A similar effect was observed with her elder sister Stella.

More composed and calm than her sister, Stella, Loretta, the younger twin, focuses on ice-based magical attacks. She follows Brauner's orders more strictly and often has to restrain Stella from attacking Jonathan and Charlotte per Brauner's orders to deal with them after Death was taken care of. Like her sister, she also looks down on Humanity, but only due to her delusional state.
