Laurels are magical plants found in Castlevania: Simon's Quest. They can be bought in various towns, two plants for 50 hearts apiece, or given for free in a later mansion. When used, Simon will become invincible for several seconds, enabling him to safely walk through/past monsters and safely cross through the poisonous marshes found in specific areas, in this case making Laurels a necessity (the huge marsh west of Jova, for example, cannot be passed unless Simon has Laurels in his inventory). Simon can only hold 4 laurels at any given time, but if he finds the Silk Bag, he can carry more.
