Jump is a standard action in all platforming games that takes your character above the platform you are on and then lands you back on a platform. Most games accomplish jumping by pressing a designated jump button. A noticeable exception is the cell phone game Castlevania: Order of Shadows, which uses the up button for a jump (hold for a forward jump). Simply pressing the jump button causes the character to jump straight up in the air, while pressing the button while holding the left or right arrow causes it to jump forwards. In more modern games, it is possible to control the characters' horizontal movement while in the air with the directional or analog buttons. Most attacks that do not have a warmup period can be performed while jumping.

Special kinds of jumps can be performed in some games, such as a Double Jump, Triple Jump, High Jump, or Uppercut. A few games allow you to jump off of an ally while in the air.
