High Jump is the ability to leap extremely high in the air. It is usually one of the last abilities obtained in a game and can be gained through a variety of means, depending on the game. Some uppercuts also perform a high jump.
Description[]
The High Jump was first introduced in the series upon finding the Gravity Boots (called Levitation Boots in the Japanese version) in Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. Alucard is able to perform the jump by pressing ↓↑ + [Jump]. It consumes 4 MP per jump. After a high jump, Alucard usually flips around and "lands on his feet" when he hits a ceiling, but if used in a tight space, Alucard will hit his head on the ceiling instead. This move can be performed on the ground or in the air, and multiple jumps can be done in succession. However, it requires the player to have the Leap Stone relic on and to use the second jump first in order for the high jump to be available in the air or continuously. Diagonal high jumps can also be performed by pressing ↓↗ (↓↖) + [Jump], but they also require that a second jump be used first.
The need of a second jump before a high jump can be done in midair, diagonally, or continuously can be bypassed by having Alucard transform and then revert first, allowing him to do a high jump in midair without using a second jump, but it also locks his left/right movement until he lands. Another method requires Alucard to fall from enough height, so he does a forced crouch. A diagonal high jump can then be executed from the ground as soon as he lands from the fall. While performing a high jump, Alucard is invincible until reaching the apex of the jump.
Maria Renard (in the Saturn version and The Dracula X Chronicles version) and Richter Belmont have similar abilities without requiring relics to activate them. Richter and Saturn Maria will perform their high jumps while slightly moving forward. They will also deal damage to enemies and destroy objects on the way. They can damage enemies even when hitting them from under a floor, if said floor is not too thick. Not only that, but they can also perform a diagonal high jump, but, like Alucard, they can't start from the ground; they need to jump first or be in midair. In Richter's case, the angle of the jump won't change, but he'll move further forward. Maria will also consume 4 MP per jump.
The high jump abilities of Richter in Symphony of the Night and Portrait of Ruin, Julius Belmont in Aria of Sorrow, and Jonathan Morris in Portrait of Ruin actually take the form of an uppercut. In Richter's case, he performs the uppercut with his whip. In Jonathan's case, his fist is covered in flames.
In The Dracula X Chronicles version of Symphony of the Night, Maria is lifted by her Owls when performing a high jump. She can't perform it diagonally but can glide by holding the [Jump] button after high jumping. This version doesn't deal damage to enemies and doesn't break objects on the way. Maria also doesn't get any invincibility frames while performing it.
The Wolf Form has a "high jump" ability (activated by pressing ↑ + [Jump] or ↗ (↖) + [Jump] for a forward jump), although its height is not in the same league as the Gravity Boots.
Later games used various kinds of "wings" for a similar effect, including the Roc Wing from Circle of the Moon, the Griffin's Wing (Griffon Wing) from Harmony of Dissonance and Portrait of Ruin, and the Hippogryph's soul from Aria and Dawn of Sorrow. The move is activated by pressing L (by default) in midair in Aria of Sorrow and by pressing ↑ and L (L in midair) in Dawn of Sorrow and Portrait of Ruin.
The player can also execute this ability in Order of Ecclesia's Albus Mode by pressing ↑ and the L trigger (L in midair). This can be done several times, but it also consumes 15 MP.

Trivia[]
- The Gravity Boots from Castlevania: Symphony of the Night bear an uncanny resemblance to the High Jump Boots of the Metroid series, as the icon which represents both items is a boot with one wing attached near the heel. Because of how the gameplay is partially based on that of Metroid's ("metroidvania"), it is possibly a homage to that series.
- Soma Cruz is the only character known to bump his head while hitting a ceiling with High Jump. All other characters will either perform a reverse crouch or simply bounce off.
