Food can be consumed to recover health in the Castlevania series. In classic-style games, health is recovered immediately when the food item is obtained. In newer-style games, these edibles can be stored in an inventory and used at a moment of one's choosing.
Description[]
In earlier games, food was usually some kind of meat. Castlevania: Rondo of Blood introduced other types of food which Maria Renard could eat instead, such as desserts and sweets. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night was the first game to have a wide variety of food types which could be collected in an inventory and used at a later time.
Some food is hazardous to one's health and will either reduce HP or even poison the consumer. In later games, some food will also increase the amount of MP one has.
Also in Symphony of the Night, food must first be equipped and then tossed out by using the respective button. The user must then rush over to the food item to actually eat it and heal up before it flickers and disappears; multiple food items can be consumed like this via tossing out others repeatedly. However, later games instead have food along with potions and other non-equippable items be consumed automatically through their own menu upon selection.
In Castlevania: Harmony of Despair, food reverts back to having their effects occur upon picking them up, save for collecting specific foods in chests (which function like consumable potions akin to the prior metroidvania-styled food items), and many food items now have a side benefit of increasing other attributes as a bonus, in addition to replenishing HP or MP, but with these specific caveats:
- The said side benefits/bonuses only last for 5 total minutes, and cannot be stacked for multiples of the same item consumed.
- Eating any other food item overrides the previous/currently-active food bonuses and will not add to them.
- The bonuses cannot stack or affect potion consumption, although the Cream Soda, Tea, Coffee and Milk food items add to the regen rate for the stat they affect.
Game specific information[]
Castlevania: Rondo of Blood[]
Food in the Castlevania series became more varied after Rondo of Blood, in which Maria had a different set of food items (sweets) than Richter did (who continued to only eat meat).

Trivia[]
- In games like Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, the existence of edibles like Pizza could be questionable, due to the supposed time period such games take place in. However, an explanation could be the result of Dracula and his castle being able to draw power from other universes.
