The Creeper, Dodo Bird, Cockatrice and Basilisk are all flightless bird monsters that have appeared in the Castlevania series.
The Creeper (Ji Zee in Japanese) is a featherless bird-like creature in Castlevania: The Adventure, and its remake, Castlevania: The Adventure ReBirth. It appeared more human-like in the original game, but was more bird-like in the remake. It moves along minding its own business for a while on the ground, but when its struck with a weapon, it gets startled and leaps towards its assailant quickly.
The Dodo Bird is a now-extinct flightless bird that runs when it is seen. It is renowned for being a rare bird and only appears a few times in a game. It was called the Dodo Bird by the Europeans because it didn't run when being hunted, since it was only found on an island with no predators. In Castlevania, after being hunted to near-extinction, it runs immediately upon being seen without attacking.
The Cockatrice and Basilisks are crosses between birds and lizards. Their gaze or breath can usually turn you into stone. In mythology the Cockatrice is the result of a male chickens (cocks) egg incubated by either a toad or a snake. Cockatrices are often synonymous with Basilisks as they share both a similar appearance and similar abilities, resembling a large draconic chicken with either the ability to turn people to stone, kill them on sight or kill via a highly poisonous breath. Cockatrices die upon hearing a cock crow and can be killed by a weasel.
In Circle of the Moon, the Cockatrice is a DSS card representing the element of Stone. When combined with other cards, stone effects are created, such as a petrifying stone whip, or actually becoming stone, greatly decreasing your mobility but increasing your strength. If one has been lucky enough to acquire the card early in the game, many areas which you were not supposed to reach at that time can now be accessed, as you can now petrify some enemies and use them as stepping platforms to reach them. When the Uranus card has been acquired, the player can summon a cockatrice, which will do massive stone damage to all enemies on the screen.
