Trolls are large bestial humanoids that dwell in the wild. Although peaceful when among their own kind, trolls react with extreme aggression whenever a human trespasses into their territory. Over the course of his quest for the God Mask, Gabriel Belmont encounters three different species of trolls: the giant Cave Trolls (which had appeared in previous Castlevania games, although originally called "Chupacabras" in Japan), their smaller cousins the Small Troll, and their bog-dwelling cousins the Swamp Trolls.
In Lords of Shadow[]
Gabriel first encounters trolls in The Dead Bog. After obtaining the Hook Tip from a ruined mausoleum, he is attacked in the graveyard by a Swamp Troll who had been silently stalking him across the bog. Later on, Gabriel encounters Cave Trolls who he can tame with the Spiked Chain to serve as a mount, allowing him to harness their great strength to smash through both enemies and obstacles.

Trivia[]
- According to Nordic legend, when a troll dies it turns to stone. Several of the rock outcroppings found in Castlevania: Lords of Shadow do resemble Trolls.
