The Killer Fish is an enemy in the Castlevania series. It is an ancient, man-eating fish. Rumored to be quite tasty.

Description[]

The Killer Fish is a large fish with a taste for human flesh often found in the waterways and sewers beneath Dracula's castle, although they can be found inhabiting salt-water habitats as well. Some Killer Fish will actively pursue the player should they enter infested waters, although most of the times they'll simply ram into them if they stray too close.

The Killer Fish first appeared in Castlevania's first underwater stage in the parody game Kid Dracula. They appeared in a more serious form in Castlevania: Symphony of the Night and many following games.

Killer Fish are able to be filleted and cooked to provide a delicious meal. In Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia, it sometimes drops Raw Killer Fish, an item necessary to complete one of Aeon's quests.

Appearances[]

Kid Dracula[]

First appearance of this fish enemy, where unlike most of its more threatening looking counterparts in the Castlevania series, it instead resembles a goofy looking ocean sunfish. It is found in Stage 3 and only appears in a couple of small rooms, where it just enters from one side of the screen and slowly swims about minding its own business.

Castlevania: Circle of the Moon[]

Called Spearfish in this game, this enemy's design now resembles the real life typical swordfish. It patrols the Underground Waterway in Camilla's Castle.

It just swims back and forth a determined distance, much like the more common Killer Fish, although it won't actively pursue the player. However, they are often encountered in areas populated by other enemies, such as Fishheads, Abiondargs and Witches, which all in conjunction may pose a respectable challenge by covering both surface and underwater areas. In addition, its considerable size –ending in a conveniently shaped spear-like nose– can make it hard to avoid among all the chaos.

A physically similar enemy, the Sea Stinger, appeared later in Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia, although its attack pattern is different by instead jumping out of the water.

Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow[]

This unique iteration of Killer Fish features brown scales and a very large mouth, with a body shape resembling that of a real-life angler fish, but without the signature bioluminescent lure that make up its name.

They are much more aggressive and display more complex behavior than any other type of Killer Fishes, able to dive up and down in order to pursue the player, as well as being quicker to charge at the player once they are within range. A stark contrast to the more docile and simple Killer Fishes seen in Symphony of the Night and Order of Ecclesia that can only swim forward and backward in a straight line. In exchange, they are smaller, only man-size instead of twice as big.

Sometimes the Killer Fish is accompanied by a smaller and weaker fish (about a quarter as strong). This fish is more aggressive, although it has less speed. Curiously, one particular room has a single Killer Fish lying on dry ground, able to be killed with ease.

Gaining dominance over the Killer Fish's soul grants Soma Cruz the Torpedo Fish ability, which allows him to shoot forward a Killer Fish at great speed while underwater. However, if the spell is cast while out of the water, the fish will immediately die and the attack will be discarded.

Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia[]

The Killer Fish is only encountered in the deepest underwater caverns of the Kalidus Channel. It uses the same sprite set as those seen in Symphony of the Night and thus exhibits same behavior. It drops the Raw Killer Fish, which is required in order to complete Aeon's "I've Never Eaten That" quest. Since the drop is a bit rare (2%), it is recommended to equip all available LCK-boosting gear, find a room where the fish spawns near the entrance and use ranged attacks that can kill it fast (such as Nitesco).

Trivia[]

  • In Kid Dracula, the Japanese name of this enemy roughly translates to Woo! Mambo (うっまんぼ Uttu Manbo?), which could be a reference to Konami's 1989 MSX2 shooter, Space Manbow, where the player controls a similarly shaped ship.
    • The ship in Space Manbow in turn inspired the playable characters Mambo and Samba from the Parodius series; and in fact, both them and the Kid Dracula enemy share a very similar design.
