Gold is a form of currency and a statistic in the Castlevania series. It usually appears as either coins or money bags, which add to the total number of points or gold the player has. It can also be obtained by selling items.

Gold is an addition to Castlevania games that has changed over time. In games prior to Symphony of the Night, bags of money can be found in candles or dropped by enemies, increasing the player's points and the chances of getting an extra life. However, in Symphony of the Night, bags of money, as well as individual coins, can be used to buy stuff from the Master Librarian. Since then, most Castlevania games have featured a merchant somewhere, such as the wandering Merchant in Harmony of Dissonance, Hammer in Aria of Sorrow and Dawn of Sorrow, or Jacob in Order of Ecclesia. Money can be used to buy diverse things from these merchants, such as usable items, weapons, armor, and occasionally, spells.

There are also many equippable items that make finding money easier. The Gold Ring accessory can be used to increase the rate and amount of money found (depending on the game), as does the Greed Amulet.

Game specific information[]

Castlevania/Castlevania Chronicles[]

In the original Castlevania and Chronicles, denominations of Red Money Bag Icon ($100), Blue Money Bag Icon ($400), White Money Bag Icon ($700), and Flashing Money Bag Icon ($1,000) can be found.

There are many secret bonus money bags that can be uncovered by performing certain actions in specific locations. For example, in the courtyard the player character traverses at the beginning of the game to reach the castle, jumping past the castle's entrance will make a flashing money bag worth $1,000 to rise from the ground.

These money bags are replaced by other valuable items, such as Crowns, Treasure Chests and Moais, in the second loop of the game.

Castlevania: The Adventure[]

"The Valuable Coin" is an item found in Castlevania: The Adventure. They can be found after destroying a candle. This is the most common item found inside of candles scattered throughout stages, and will award the player 50 points to his or her overall total.

At 10,000 points, the player will receive an extra life. Killing enemies, defeating bosses, picking up valuable items, or receiving a bonus for the amount of time remaining on the timer at the end of a level, will also award points to the player.

Castlevania: Rondo of Blood/Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles[]

Money bags not only provide points, but they also add currency used in the "Technic" (RoB)/"Boss Demo" (DXC) shop, where the player can unlock demo replays of encountered boss fights. Each money bag gives currency equal to 1/100 of point value.

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night[]

Coins are usually reserved for smallest increments of money, denoting $1. Enemies usually drop bags of money, with their color denoting their value, such as red $25, orange $50, gold $100, green $250 and blue $400. The higher values of money, such as the white $1,000 or the black $2,000, are much more rare and noticeably bigger in size than their smaller values. Money bags of over $100 are also listed as drops in the bestiary. These bags are usually only found in hard to reach candles, although they will always appear at the same place, making farming those bags easier. In the data of Symphony of the Night, there also exists a flashing treasure chest, which grants the player $5,000 when collected, but remains unused for unknown reasons as it would have likely been in a hidden room. It is fully functional, and can be added in with a cheating device by replacing a candle that holds a specific item.

The Ring of Arcana can cause enemies drop bigger Money Bags. Using the special attack of Jewel Sword can also create some coins, where these coins do not trigger the item tag of picking up standard $1 coins.

Castlevania (N64)/Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness[]

There are only three types of gold bags found from enemies and candles. A red bag contains 100 gold, a green bag being 300, and a yellow bag being 500.

In order to fight the optional boss Renon, the player must spend more than 30,000 gold in total in his shop.

Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance[]

One unique feature in this game is that, even the smallest $1 coins are listed in enemy drops, such that enemies will never yield random gold drops not listed.

There is an easy to reach candle outside the upper Warp Zone of the Entrance, which contains a whopping $400, making it the main gold source of the game.

Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow/Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow[]

In Aria of Sorrow and Dawn of Sorrow, Soma Cruz can obtain the Mimic's Enchant-type soul, which will allow him to obtain gold as he gets hit.

In Aria of Sorrow, killing an enemy which has an item drop, will have 1/128 chance of dropping gold, either $1, $10, $50 or $100, if they get neither soul nor item. Equipping the Gold Ring will raise the chance to 8 times higher, and the value into either $100, $500, $1,000 or $2,000. Breaking a candle with maxed MP will ensure Soma get either $1 or $10; although it's possible for it to be as high as 100 from a candle despite that being a very rare case in Aria of Sorrow, Dawn of Sorrow has it on a more frequent measure. Also from Aria of Sorrow and onward, a coin can have as much value as $100.

In Dawn of Sorrow, there are three rooms with a numeric locked door. In order to unlock these doors, Soma must have last 3 digits of his gold being the same number of the door. The numbers are "777" (Three 7s), "666" (Gold Ring) and "573" (Shaman Ring), respectively.

Kid Dracula/Kid Dracula (GB)[]

In these games, coins are used to play minigames at the end of each level. Each coin has a value of 1 gold. They are dropped only by enemies (all enemies can drop coins), at the sole condition that Kid Dracula kills the enemy with a charged offensive attack. Bosses don't drop coins, with the exception of Garamoth, who drops an Ebisumaru Coin instead (value 20 gold).

Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin[]

In the City of Haze, there is a bakery with some cakes on display in the counter. To buy them, the player must first attack the cash register to open its drawer, then, while their MP is full, attack the candle right above the cash register to cause a random gold item to spawn and fall into the drawer. Then, the cake with corresponding price will be lifted to the top of the counter and become available to collect if it is not already in the player's inventory. The Gold Ring is required to make $500 and $1,000 to appear in order to buy the Tarte au Poire and Gateau Fraise, respectively.

There are also two quests related to gold. "Number of Fortune" requires making the last three digits of the player's gold "777", while "Abandon Greed" can only be done without any gold remaining.

Last, the Miser Ring provides an ATK bonus scaled with the player's holding gold. This item also appears in Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia and onward.

Trivia[]

  • In most games, gold is represented by the dollar sign ($), which is anachronistic because the dollar wasn't invented until the 18th century and started to be used on a large scale in the 19th century.
