The Claymore is the most basic two-handed Great Sword in Castlevania.
In Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, it is the first of the Western slow-swinging two-handed swords. It is also the first Great Sword with the Dash Thrust special ability, which can be activated when you press back, then forward + [Attack]. This sword is usually replaced by the Flamberge, which is similar, but has a higher attack power.
In Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow, it is the base type of Great Sword that can evolve eventually into any other type of Great Sword. Since it is obtained right after defeating the Flying Armor in a room that contains a copy of the Flying Armor and its two swords in the background hanging on the walls, it is possible that the Flying Armor used a pair of Claymores in that game rather than its normal Flamberge.
