"Your word is my command."
— Faerie to Alucard in Symphony of the Night

The Faerie Familiar is an eidolon resembling a winged sprite. She is one of the five familiars at Alucard's command in Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. She is obtained by acquiring the Faerie Card. Similar faeries have also appeared in Castlevania Judgment and Castlevania: Moonlight Rhapsody.

Appearances[]

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night[]

Although the Faerie may appear not very useful at first (she seems to just hang back behind Alucard), she plays a role which, depending on the player's particular play style, may be critical to their progress.

If at any time Alucard is under a status condition that he isn't immune to by way of equipment, the Faerie will administer the appropriate remedy without the player having to manually equip Alucard. If Alucard is assaulted by a particular special attack, the Faerie will deploy the best resistance potion against said assault. Should Alucard's HP fall into the critical range (<=25%), she'll throw Potions to Alucard (as long as he has them in stock) until his HP are back in the safe range for his level. The Faerie throws items of lowest strength first, moving up when Alucard has run out of such items. If Alucard has no Potions or High Potions in his inventory, the Faerie will be unable to heal him, she will then spin and say "no medicine left" (in the PlayStation version). In The Dracula X Chronicles version (and versions based on it), the Faerie will simply say "no medicine", while the Fairy will say "no more left". She'll never throw Elixirs and never uses acquired food, but as she is the only being able to make use of Life Apples, she is capable of reviving Alucard and restoring him to full HP should he fall in battle. Her exclusive use of Hammers allows her to free a petrified Alucard much more quickly than if the player were to manually free him out of his entrapment. The Faerie won't use the Resist Stone item when Alucard is petrified if Hammers are available in the inventory. She will use the Hammers instead. If Alucard has no Hammers, she will throw a Resist Stone like the other resist items if he is hit by a Stone-inflicting attack several times in succession and has no immunity to Stone status via equipment. These behaviors increase in probability as her experience level grows.

It should be noted that a Duplicator does not work in combination with the Faerie Familiar; it only prevents a decrease in the number of items when Alucard uses them from his hands, not when the Faerie uses them.

The Faerie also has the helpful habit of flying toward, then commenting on, secret walls near Alucard's current location ("There's something funny about this wall."), among other similar actions.

The Japanese PlayStation version of Symphony of the Night and the PSP version (and later versions based on it) also contain a Fairy Familiar (called a Half-Faerie Familiar in the Japanese version), which is summoned with the Fairy Card. It is identical to the Faerie Familiar, except that it can sing a lullaby song called "Nocturne" if Alucard sits in a chair for a while and falls asleep. The Fairy Familiar (along with the N Demon Familiar) was removed from the original English PlayStation version of the game, so neither their dialogues nor the song appear in that version. While the Sega Saturn version of Symphony of the Night also includes the Fairy Familiar, it is required to obtain an exclusive item to this version, called the Song Lyrics Card, in order for the Fairy to be able to sing the song. In all versions that include the Fairy Familiar, she will be more prone to start singing the higher her level is. However, early Japanese versions have a glitch in which she never sings the song. This was patched in the v1.2 release, mostly known as "the best" or "PSOne Books" versions.

Both the Faerie Familiar and Half-Faerie Familiar were voiced by Hekiru Shiina in the original Japanese PlayStation version of the game.

Castlevania Judgment[]

In Judgment, the Sprite Familiar is an arms accessory that can be equipped to customize the appearance of a character. She sits on the character's shoulder and can be unlocked by accumulating 10 hours of gameplay.

Castlevania: Moonlight Rhapsody[]

Faerie Familiars can be utilized by the player in Moonlight Rhapsody. The Mage Tower has also summoned several different familiars, including the Mage Tower Familiar Goblin, which can be encountered in the game as a non-playable character.

Trivia[]

  • The 2019 video game, Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, directed by Koji Igarashi and considered to be a spiritual successor of the Castlevania series, features a familiar called Carabosse, who resembles and acts almost identically to the Faerie Familiars from Castlevania.
    • Like the Fairy Familiar variant from Symphony of the Night, Carabosse will also sit on the player character's shoulder after some time of remaining idle. Additionally, if the player sits on the piano in the Garden of Silence and starts playing it, Carabosse will also sing a song like the Fairy does in Symphony of the Night.
  • The Fairy can appear as one of the 16 Save File icons in Symphony of the Night.
