Dracula had been destroyed by Richter Belmont five years earlier (as depicted in the Final Stage: Bloodlines prologue stage). His servant Shaft intends to revive Dracula during the events of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. His Relics are divided up and guarded by a different monster in the Inverted Castle. Shaft had thought that he had removed Richter as a threat to Dracula by twisting his mind with a spell. This caused Richter him to seek Dracula's return, so that he could fight him once more. The arrival of Dracula's son, Alucard, with the intention of destroying his father though was unexpected. He defeated Shaft's hold on Richter, brought Dracula's Relics together (reviving him in the process), and faced his father alone. After Dracula was defeated, Alucard told him his mother Lisa's last words to him, which were that she would love him for eternity. Alucard then placed a seal on his relics^[1] with his own blood to prevent another revival in the near term.
