Dogether is an enemy in the Castlevania series. It is a magical being created by a forbidden spell.
Origins[]
Dogether has his origins based on the Dungeons & Dragons' creature, the Beholder, making it the second of two bosses in the game to be based on it, with the other being the Bone Golem. A beholder is an aberration comprising a floating spheroid body with a large fanged mouth, a single central eye on the front and many flexible eyestalks on the top with deadly magical powers. Different breeds of beholders have different magic abilities.
A beholder's eyes each possess a different magical ability; the main eye projects an anti-magical cone and the other eyes use different spell-like abilities (disintegrate objects, transmute flesh to stone, cause sleep, slow the motion of objects or beings, charm animals, charm humans, cause death, induce fear, levitate objects, and inflict serious wounds).
The Beholder is among the most classic of all Dungeons & Dragons monsters, appearing in every edition of the game since 1975.
Description[]
A strange eyeball monster created from a forbidden spell. Dogether mainly attacks through the use of different kinds of magic, either Fire or Earth based, or even by shooting lasers (probably Wind based). Even though his spells are powerful, he takes time to cast them, leaving himself open to attack in the meantime.
Appearances[]
Castlevania: Rondo of Blood[]
Dogether is the boss of Stage 3'. He attacks by flying and teleporting around the room, and by summoning three different rune based spells:
- Shoots a three-way green laser shot.
- Vomits a barrage of descending flames. These will bounce off if they hit a wall and will remain burning for a moment after they land.
- Summons and surrounds himself with a shield of rocks.
When defeated, Dogether will use his last remaining strength to fly a whole circle around the room while chanting one final spell, leaving runes behind as he does so; he'll then quickly move above the player and drop over them in a final attempt to inflict some damage - all this while he gets engulfed in flames and gets destroyed.
Attacks/Abilities:
In The Dracula X Chronicles remake, Dogether is slower to cast his spells and his flames do not bounce as much. The arena also has an extra third platform the player can stand onto.

Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin[]
Unlike his debut appearance in Rondo of Blood, where he appeared as a powerful boss, in Portrait of Ruin, Dogether appears as a rare lesser enemy. He is mainly encountered in the Forest of Doom and later reappears in the Nest of Evil. Initially, Dogether won't be present in the rooms where he appears in, and instead, only if the player approaches his spawning location within that room will he materialize and attack.
He basically retains all of his attacks from Rondo of Blood, although he takes more time before casting spells and doesn't cause damage during his death animation. He also has a different, less-human voice. He doesn't pose much of a threat this time around, though, as the player will usually have more room to maneuver and he's specially weak against Holy, sometimes dying in a single hit from a Holy-based weapon if the player is strong enough.
He drops the Monocle and the Stone Circle spell; the latter which can prove to be very useful in the battle against Abaddon in the Nest of Evil.

Trivia[]
- Dogether is named after Suzuki Dogezaemon, from the Bastard!! manga. Originally, the monster in the manga was a beholder, but after complaints from the Japanese division of TSR, the company responsible for Dungeons & Dragons, the manga's supervisor, one alleged Mr. Suzuki, apologized and the creature was redesigned to have comical arms and legs, and it was also given a name change. The Japanese word dogeza means "apologizing on hands and knees", and is also a pun on the word "gaze". This story turned out to be made up, however, as the real editor's name was Kazushi Hagiwara and there's no account that he actually apologized to TSR.
- Dogether appears to call Sanskrit runes when casting spells.
