POR Crossbow

Crossbow is one of Jonathan Morris's sub-weapon skills in Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin. When activated, a crossbow fires explosive bolts which cause Fire damage to enemies struck by them. When the Crossbow is mastered, its explosive radius becomes larger and deals increased damage.

Origins[]

Crossbows were used as significant weapons during the warring States period in China. Instead of relying on an archer's strength, the crossbow's mechanisms allowed it to be fired without tiring the crossbowman. Crossbows were used by Europeans, such as Greeks and Romans, and became to be known as an armor piercing weapon. In China, though, the crossbow was revered more for its ability to unleash deadly volleys upon the enemy.

By the 11th century, the Chinese created strategies involving firing lines of crossbowmen, where they would first fire at incoming cavalry and then be protected by shielded pikemen and archers, while the crossbows were reloaded.[1]

Notes[]

  • Note that while the crossbow bolts travel forward at a very fast speed, much like the Dagger sub-weapon, after a few seconds the trajectory results in said bolts losing altitude. This is not a gameplay concern to worry about, however, given that by the time Jonathan is able to begin moving again after firing, the bolt will have already left the screen.
