Boxes where the dead rest. Many Castlevanias show Dracula's coffin in the background in the Castle Keep. Sometimes Dracula is shown to rise from it as a result of the hero making it to his chambers or after a successful resurrection by his minions.
In the parody game Wai Wai World 2: SOS! Parsley Castle, Dracula himself is not present to face off against the hero, but an empty coffin handles any intruders for him. It is shown to have legs and contains a trap when opened (a boxing glove on springs).
Coffins also cause damage in full Castlevania games as well. Some Snapper Caskets form a circle in Super Castlevania IV, while others try to suck Simon towards them.
In the Catacombs of Castlevania: Circle of the Moon, floating coffins can cause damage when the lid is forced open by the mummy inside. An endless stream of mummies then come out of it if it is not destroyed.
Some coffins conceal hidden paths in Dracula's domain. One of the Snapper Caskets in Super Castlevania IV leads to a hidden area. A coffin that leads to multiple and random hidden areas can be entered in Castlevania 64 and Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness.
Alucard (or any other playable character) is able to sleep in coffins in Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, which can save game progress. A nightmare coffin leads Alucard to a dream where he faces the Succubus.
