Cardinal Volpe is a leading member of the Brotherhood of Light. He sent many knights out to their doom in an attempt to defeat the Lords of Shadow. He witnessed Rinaldo Gandolfi make the Combat Cross.
He is the elder seen in the prologue of Mirror of Fate, who is aware of Gabriel's fate and convinces Marie to conceal the birth of his son to his father and bring him to the Brotherhood. He is aware of the Mirror of Fate and its power.
It is suggested that he is actually one of the founders of the order,[citation needed] which may suggest that Carmilla, Zobek, and Cornell were his leading champions.
