The Bowgun Armor, or Crossbow Armor, is an enemy in the Castlevania series. It is an armored warrior equipped with a crossbow and exploding bolts.
Description
Armored enemies equipped with a bow-like weapon, such as bow and arrows, a bowgun or a crossbow. In Castlevania Chronicles, the weapon is aimed straight ahead. In Portrait of Ruin, they shoot homing rocket-like bolts which explode on contact, dealing massive damage.
Appearances
Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin
In Portrait of Ruin, Crossbow Armors usually appear behind a first line of enemy defenses, providing supporting fire. The player should be very careful when approaching one of these enemies, as they usually have enough time to fire before they arrive to their position. The Crossbow Armor can shoot either directly or slightly above the player, allowing the bolt's own tracking system to home toward them. Each time they are about to fire, they telegraph this move by emitting a red blinking light from their eyes.
They are easily defeated, though. If they are at the same level of the player, even if they stand behind other enemies, the player can just cast 1,000 Blades and take them all out in one swift attack. If they are positioned in hard to reach platforms, a single cast of Holy Lightning will be enough to dispatch them. Alternatively, the player can just hit the homing bolt in midair and send it back toward the Crossbow Armor, heavily damaging and usually killing him this way.
A stronger version of this enemy, the Buster Armor, appears in later stages of the game.
