The item first was introduced in the 1988 arcade game Haunted Castle, where it only flew forward a limited distance and did not return. It later appears in the 1994 Sega Genesis game Castlevania: Bloodlines as a weapon that returns back in an arc after being thrown. This type of boomerang returned in Symphony of the Night, Portrait of Ruin and Harmony of Despair.
A flaming version of the boomerang, called the Fire Boomerang, also exists in some games.
