The Axe Armor, also known as Axe Knight, is a common enemy in the Castlevania series. They are heavily armored zombie warriors that wield an equally heavy axe which they may throw like a boomerang.
Description[]
An Axe Armor, as its name implies, uses a heavy axe as its primary weapon. They attack by throwing the axe, which then returns to their hands, or more rarely, is thrown in an arc. Some Axe Armors can also hack with this axe. Some variants also hold shields, making them tougher to defeat, and may block some attacks. A playable version of this enemy is available in Castlevania: Symphony of the Night and Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin (see Old Axe Armor). Axe Armors carrying a long handled axe that is used only for hacking are called Great Axe Armors.
In the early platform side-scrolling adventures, the Axe Armor could throw axes horizontally at either high or low elevation levels; both elevations offered the player a chance to avoid being hit by crouching or jumping, respectively. Some later revisions of this behavior don't allow the player to crouch under higher thrown axes, forcing them to either jump over or retreat from their trajectory. Some Axe Armors are also able to throw their axes in an Arc or slice with them while holding them.
There are a few special varieties of Axe Armors, including the Double Axe Armor, which throws two axes at a time. A special version, the Red Axe Armor, will reassemble itself a short moment after being destroyed, in a similar way as the classic Red Skeletons.
In the opening for Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow, an Axe Armor attempts to attack a hooded figure, only for this, revealed to be Soma Cruz, to dodge the attack after discarding his cloak and cut down the foe with a sword.
Game specific information[]
Castlevania[]
The Axe-Man carries a shield and an axe. It remains relatively stationary until approached, at which point it backs away if able. It occasionally stops to throw axes, some high, and some low, which return to it like a boomerang.
Vampire Killer (video game)[]
- See: Golden Knight
The Axe-Man carries a shield and an axe as in Castlevania. It's design is distinct from the one in Castlevania and it dons golden armor. It paces back and forth, occasionally throwing an Axe toward the player, always at a high level, which return to it like a boomerang.
Haunted Castle[]
The Knight wields and axe and carries a shield in the hallways of Haunted Castle. Unlike previous knights that have wielded axes, this one will not throw them. Instead, it blocks Simon's path and engages in melee combat with him, occasionally striking him with its axe.
Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse'[]
The Axe Knight Guard behaves much the same as it did in the original Castlevania. It was given a graphical update that includes for the first time animations for throwing the axe.
Super Castlevania IV[]
The Axe Knight Guard in Super Castlevania IV appears as a graphical update to the one found in Dracula's Curse. It is shown lowering itself with its knees when throwing it axe low.
Castlevania Chronicles[]
- See: Golden Knight
The design of the Axe Armor in Castlevania Chronicles appears to be an update to the one found in Vampire Killer, in that it also dons golden armor. It also has distinct spikes on its pauldrons and helmet. It builds on Haunted Castle's Knight in that it can perform melee axe attacks with one axe, while still being able to perform the traditional high low boomerang-like attacks with another axe. It has one new capability, which involves the ability to move its shield up or down to block high or low.
Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia[]
While Axe Knights can drop the Ascia glyph, this can only happen when they have an axe falling off their hands. Killing them before taking another axe out will not yield any glyph.
