One of the toughest monsters in the Castlevania series, the Axe Knight was a force to be reckoned with before its armor relatives appeared and became stronger.

The Axe Knight is distinguished by its mode of attack. The Axe Knight attacks the heroes by throwing axes. In the early platform sidescrolling adventures, the Axe Knight could throw axes horizontally at either a head level elevation or at a leg level elevation. Both elvations offer the player a chance to avoid being hit by ducking or jumping respectively. Axe Knights are usually knights obscured by the full plate armor they are equipped with.

In the game, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night if the player completed the game and created a new character named "axearmor", the main character had the option of becoming an Axe Knight by equipping the special armor.
